Graziella
Graziella is a crescent lace shawl inspired by the sun-bleached charm of the French countryside, a shawl you'd find draped over a chair at a farmhouse and never want to put down.
Worked in fingering weight from the neckline outward, the body grows through alternating lace panels and dip stitch texture before finishing with a knitted-on Provençal lace border and scalloped edge. Airy enough for warm evenings, beautiful enough to be the whole outfit.
Design Details
The Provençal lace border is the heart of this design, worked directly onto the live stitches at the end, it gives Graziella its scalloped, rustic finish and that handmade-heirloom quality that's hard to put into words but impossible to miss.
The body balances open lace panels with a dip stitch pattern so the knitting stays interesting from cast on to bind off. The crescent shape sits naturally across the shoulders and drapes softly without needing to be fussed with.
Pattern Highlights
Light fingering weight fabric with soft drape
Engaging lace without being overwhelming
Knitted-on Provençal border for a rustic, scalloped finish
Easy to adapt to stash yarns and fiber blends
Construction Overview
Graziella is worked flat from the neckline outward. Panels of dip stitches and open lace form the crescent body. The live stitches are bound off using a knitted-on lace border worked directly onto the shawl, creating the scalloped edge.
Yarn Notes
We knit our sample in Linum by Miss La Motte, a linen merino single ply that suits this design beautifully. The linen content gives the fabric a soft, natural drape and a little structure, while the merino keeps it comfortable against the skin. The single ply construction lets the lace open up generously after blocking.
Miss La Motte Linum
Fiber: 90% superwash merino, 10% linen
Yardage: 393 yards (360 m) per 100g skein
Shown in custom colorway: Celadon Slate
Any fingering weight yarn with good drape will work well. Linen blends, silk blends, soft merino singles, and cotton blends all suit the open lace beautifully. Avoid anything with a heavy halo as it can obscure the stitch detail.
Needles & Gauge
US 5 (3.75 mm) 16–40" circular needle
Wet blocked.
We like the relaxed drape achieved on US 5 and do not find a gauge swatch necessary. If you tend to knit loosely, go down one needle size to ensure you have enough yardage.
Yardage Requirements
750–800 yards (685–730 m)
Finished Measurements
Depth at center: 16" / 40.5 cm
Width tip to tip: 63" / 160 cm
Inner arch: 72" / 183 cm
