Golden Fern
Golden Fern is a must-have addition to your knitting repertoire. With its captivating two-color brioche and unique asymmetric shape, this shawl is a beautiful way to explore texture and color. The low stitch count keeps the knitting moving, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the process and fall in love with the finished piece.
Its organic motif lends itself to artistic interpretation and customization, so you can create something truly your own. Our sample is knit in plump, soft Barley single-ply by Six & Seven Fiber in deeply saturated Fig for the background and lightly speckled Plumage for the foreground, with a swirl of Caramel as an optional accent.
Video tutorials walk you through casting on, binding off, and reading the written brioche pattern so you can approach the project with confidence.
Design Details
Golden Fern is a two-color brioche shawl worked flat into an asymmetric shape. The motif grows across the fabric and can easily be customized based on yarn availability or preferred size.
You can:
Add an accent color (we used it beginning around row 49, though it can be added anytime)
Omit the accent color and work entirely in two colors
Bind off early or continue knitting in plain brioche to extend the shawl
A styling guide is included to help with wrapping and draping options.
Pattern Highlights

Construction Overview
Golden Fern is worked flat in two-color brioche from one end of the shawl to the other, creating its asymmetric shape. An optional accent color may be added for the border. The shawl is finished with a bind off and wet blocked to open the brioche texture and define the shape.
Tutorials include brioche cast on, bind off, and following the written instructions.
Yarn Notes
We knit our sample in Barley Base Fingering by Six & Seven Fiber.
The single ply merino gives the brioche excellent depth and softness, and high contrast colors emphasize the texture beautifully.
Fiber: 100% single ply superwash merino
Yardage: 400 yds (366 m) per 100g skein
Any fingering weight yarn in two contrasting colors will work well. A third accent color for the border is optional.
Needles & Gauge
US 6 (4.00 mm) 16–32" circular needle
We like the drape achieved on US 6 needles and do not find a gauge swatch necessary for this pattern. If you have loose brioche tension, go down one needle size to ensure yardage.
Yardage Requirements
Two skeins fingering weight yarn in contrasting colors plus optional accent color.
MC: 400 yards
CC: 400 yards (280 yards if using 3 colors)
C3 (accent, optional): 120 yards
Accent sample used approximately 30g
Finished Measurements
After wet blocking and pinning:
Length: 78" (198 cm)
Width at widest point: 30" (76 cm)
