Hearthside Cardigan
Hearthside Cardigan is all about plush texture, scrappy color, and the kind of comfort that feels like home. Imagine curling up with your comfort show wrapped in a squishy brioche hug, with enough structure from the thoughtful shoulder and neckline shaping so you can throw it on for coffee runs too.
Worked topdown in basic two color brioche with two strands of fingering weight yarn held together for both Foreground (FG) and Background (BG) colors, the marled effect comes from changing one strand at a time so colors blend and flow softly. Speckles and small leftovers shine here, creating gentle shifts and layered depth.
A deep marled garter hem and cuffs anchor the fabric, while the oversized garter shawl collar frames the neckline and gives the sweater presence. If you’ve knit the Hearthside Pullover, this is its cozier cardigan sibling, same brioche fabric and color blending approach, now in an open, layerable shape.
Design Details
Hearthside Cardigan combines plush brioche texture with relaxed intentional shaping. The marled fabric creates movement across the sweater, while the shawl collar frames the neckline and balances the softness of the brioche.
Instead of changing colors all at once, you swap one strand at a time so the palette shifts gradually as you knit. Scraps, minis, and speckles blend together naturally, and every version ends up looking personal.
The deep garter hem, cuffs, and oversized garter collar ground the texture and give the sweater structure.

Construction Overview
Hearthside Cardigan is worked seamlessly top down. Back shoulders are worked first with short rows, then continued flat to the armholes. Front shoulders are picked up from the cast on edge, shaped with short rows, and joined to the back at the underarm.
The body is worked flat in two color brioche and finished with a marled garter hem. Sleeves are picked up and worked in the round in brioche, shaped for a tidy fit and finished with marled garter cuffs.
The wide marled garter shawl collar is picked up and shaped with short rows at the end.
Yarn Notes
This design uses fingering weight yarn held double for both FG and BG colors — four strands total.
Changing one strand at a time creates soft marled transitions and layered color. Speckled yarns and small leftovers blend beautifully, while solids or high contrast variegated yarns create bolder striping.
Our featured sample used Hue Loco’s Opalescent Set on Merino Sock, where the shifts feel soft and luminous and the speckles peek through gently.
Our autumn sample was knit entirely from stash using the palette planning tips from the included video tutorial. It turned into a completely different sweater, which is exactly the point; Hearthside works best with yarn you already love.
