Ponderosa Socks

•  Cables without a cable needle

•  Heel flap

•  Turning the heel

•  Picking up for the gusset

•  Horizontal stitch

Ponderosa Socks take inspiration from their namesake Ponderosa Sweater and Ponderosa Hat, beloved for their plump cables and timeless feel. These socks bring that same bold texture to your feet while still being comfortable enough for everyday wear.

Knit from the top down with a classic heel flap and gusset, they’re shaped to fit securely and hold their structure over time. Cables travel down the leg and continue across the top of the foot, giving the pair a cohesive look that feels right at home with the rest of the Ponderosa collection.

Pattern Highlights

  • Classic heel flap and gusset fit securely on the foot

  • Bold cable panels that continue onto the instep

  • Written and charted cable instructions included

  • A satisfying project that finishes into an everyday wearable pair

Construction Overview

Ponderosa Socks are knit seamlessly in the round from the cuff down. The leg begins with ribbing before moving into the cable pattern. After the heel flap and gusset are completed, the foot is worked in the round with cables continuing along the instep and stockinette on the sole. The socks are finished with a Kitchener stitch toe closure.

Yarn Notes

We especially love Plucky Knitter Feet Fingering for this design. Its tight, round spin gives crisp stitch definition so the cables stay clear and dimensional, while the nylon content keeps the socks durable for daily wear.

Fiber: 90% superwash merino / 10% nylon

Yardage: 425 yds (388 m) per 115 g skein

Any fingering weight sock yarn with good stitch definition will work well. Tonals and solids both highlight the cables nicely.
