Each winter, we celebrate gifting season with a brand-new pair of mittens. This year’s design, Tanglewood, brings a rich, twisting cable motif accentuated with bobbles that winds organically across the back of the hand. Thoughtful shaping, a stretchy folded cuff, and a beautifully balanced motif make these the kind of mitts you’ll want to wear again and again.
With plump DK-weight yarn and flowing cables, Tanglewood has a relaxed rhythm to knit and a classic look you’ll reach for all winter. There’s also a video tutorial for knitting cables without a cable needle, so you can work through the pattern comfortably.
Construction Overview
These mittens are worked in the round from the cuff to the fingers. Beginning with a ribbed cuff, stitches are increased for the thumb along the palm while cables flow up the back of the hand. After placing the thumb stitches on waste yarn, the cable motif continues toward the fingertips with charted decreases shaping the upper hand. The mitten is finished with Kitchener stitch, then the thumb is worked in the round, and finally the cuff is folded after blocking for a polished fit.
