Scotch Broom is a lightweight tee featuring a wide boatneck and a stunning, textured yoke worked in knitted broomstick lace. The lace looks intricate but is created from simple repeated yarnovers, and a full video tutorial walks you through it step by step.

The front and back are worked flat first, then joined to knit the body in the round. A short shoulder seam lets you easily adjust the neckline width from more open to more fitted. Length is customizable, so you can keep it cropped or extend the body for more coverage.

It’s a satisfying, relatively low yardage garment and a great way to use special fingering weight skeins.

Design Details

The textured yoke is worked in knitted broomstick lace, creating an open vertical fabric that sits cleanly across the shoulders. The wide boatneck is shaped by a short shoulder seam, which allows you to control how open or fitted the neckline feels when worn.

The front and back are worked flat to the underarm, then joined to work the body in the round in smooth stockinette. Length is fully customizable, so you can keep the top cropped or knit additional body length for more coverage.

Construction Overview

Scotch Broom begins with an i-cord cast on. The front yoke is worked flat in knitted broomstick lace to the desired depth and held. The back is worked the same way.

The shoulders are seamed, allowing the neckline opening to be adjusted. The body stitches are then joined to work stockinette in the round and finished with a ribbed hem (optional split hem).

Yarn Notes

We knit our sample in Ritual Dyes Crone, a fingering weight merino with a soft hand and flowy drape. After blocking, the broomstick lace opens and settles into an airy, breathable fabric that still holds its shape. The yarn has enough body to define the texture while staying light enough for warm weather wear.

A smooth fingering weight yarn lets the yarnovers expand and shows the vertical texture clearly. Yarns with flexibility and bounce give the top its airy, wearable feel.

Scotch Broom is designed for 2–8" (5–20 cm) of positive ease at the bust.

To choose your size:

1. Measure your full bust.

2. Add 2–8"

3. Choose the pattern size that matches that number.

- 42" for a closer fit

- 46" for a looser, more relaxed fit
