Three Season Cardigan is a cable knit layer designed to earn its name. Light enough for a summer evening, warm enough for early fall, and easy enough to throw on over anything, this is the cardigan that lives on the hook by the door.

The semi-cropped silhouette and V neckline keep it modern while the integrated cable panels give it that slow-fashion, made-to-last quality. Pair it over a floral dress, with high waisted jeans, or anywhere you need just a little something extra.

If you love the cardigan, don't miss its equally cozy counterpart, Three Season Pullover

Design Details

Three Season Cardigan is a semi-cropped cable cardigan designed to be the layer you reach for all year. The integrated cable panels flow through the fronts and sleeves, the V neckline is flattering and classic, and the semi-cropped length sits perfectly over high waisted jeans or a summer dress.

The cotton wool blend keeps the fabric lighter than a traditional cable knit, warm enough for spring evenings and cool summer nights, breathable enough that you'll actually want to wear it.

Pattern Highlights

  • Lightweight but warm cotton wool fabric

  • Flattering V neck shaping

  • Integrated cable panels through the fronts and sleeves

  • Semi-cropped silhouette with customizable length

  • Seamless top down construction with video tutorials

Construction Overview

Three Season Cardigan is worked from the top down.

The back shoulders are worked separately and then joined across the back neck. The back panel is worked flat to the underarm. Front panels are picked up from the shoulder stitches and worked flat to the hem, forming the V neckline and cable panels as you go.

After the body is complete, the sides are seamed using mattress stitch. Sleeves are picked up and knit in the round. The button band and collar are added last, worked into the live stitches held from the start. Simple one row buttonholes are included.

Yarn Notes

We recommend a worsted weight cotton wool blend for this design. The combination keeps the fabric light and breathable while still giving the cables the structure and definition.

Our top picks are Cascade Cantata and Katia Concept Cotton Merino, both cotton merino blends that work beautifully for this pattern. Cascade Cantata is a blown yarn, which makes it lighter on the body than its weight suggests, the finished cardigan has real drape without feeling heavy.

Cascade Cantata — 70% Cotton / 30% Merino, 218 yds / 100g

Katia Concept Cotton Merino — 70% Cotton / 30% Wool, 115 yds / 50g

A 100% merino worsted will also work well if you prefer a warmer fabric or want to lean into the autumn end of the three season range.
